Zachary DeVore General wow, it looks nasty in there - but its been several years since the fire and unfortunately, its not well sealed anymore, so maybe we should be amazed at how good of shape the old station/office still is. Of course, prior to the N&W buying the CHW, the office was also the railroad headquarters (although as I remember from the book Crooked and Weedy, the ownership was actually out of New York - I guess that only a New Yorker would think that they could turn Reedsville into a major port on Chesapeake Bay when Baltimore and Norfolk/Newport News already existed) 9/5/2010 10:03:55 AM
Zachary DeVore General Also, I think that from Harrisonburg to the coal fields in West Virginia would have been a much worse path than the existing ones through Roanoke/Bluefield and through Cumberland. I think that the entire plan of the CHW never made a lot of sense which is why it never made it. So, the comment that only a New Yorker would think it was a good idea is more "only someone not from the area who didn't know the geography" 9/5/2010 10:06:09 AM
Zachary DeVore General BTW, Stephen, have you ever read John Wayland's history of Harrisonburg/Rockingham County? Very interesting chapter on railroads including several plans which never got off the ground in there 9/5/2010 10:07:33 AM
Stephen Brock General Thanks for all the great input, Zack!!! 9/5/2010 5:46:24 PM
